Elks Family Picnic

This year’s Family picnic went very well. We had “Chamber of Commerce weather” (really pleasant), and enjoyed the traditional activities of years past with a few new activities. We had games for all age groups, and kids of ALL ages (i.e., moms and dads) played in the bounce houses, got into the tug of war games, had their faces painted, participated in the egg toss, ran a three-legged race, and enjoyed delicious food!  Prizes included a donated $50 gift card from Walmart, bowling for 4 donated by Rancho Bowl in Santa Maria, Candy Trophies, and McDonald’s gift cards! The great DJ Frankie “G” really kept the music going!

There were information booths from valley organizations such as: The Elks Lodge 1538 Antlers, Santa Maria BMX, the YMCA, the Catholic Daughters of St Mary’s, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. People enjoyed free ice cream and fellowship throughout the day. Many enjoyed one of this year’s new attractions, a volleyball court located in the middle of the information booths. It was fun!

For me, there were 2 highlights of the day: the first was a tug of war competition between 10-year-old and under girls VS the Lodge Officers! One would think that grown adults would have it in the bag but… that was not to be. Sad to say the officers did not stand a chance against the enthusiastic girl-powered group! They took out the officers in about 30 seconds! In fact, the girl-powered group was 2 for 2 on the day and beat the 10 and under boys too!

The Lodge Officers, with the assistance of the Antler parents, did manage to redeem themselves by taking out the Antlers in a tug of war duel… that’s one for the old guys.

Another highlight was a new attraction, a watermelon-eating contest. To keep things competitive, there were three different age groups: 10 and under, 11– 6 and 17 and over. What a spectacle! I knew we would have many contestants in the younger age groups but I did not expect so many adults participating! In fact the winner in the 17-and-over category was a fifty-ish year old guy! (Good thing he did not have dentures, eh?)

Overall it was a really great day ending with a flag retirement ceremony, a perfect example of God, family, and country … aka Elkdom. It does not get any better in my opinion. It was great seeing all the people I call friends. If you were not able to attend I really hope you make it next year!

Sincerely,
Esteemed Lecturing Knight,
Louie Torres
